JOAN MIRÓ

Biography

JOAN MIRÓ, 18931983

Born in Barcelona, Spain, Joan Miró always remained closely attached to his origins. He is known for his sculpture, painting and printmaking, and his works traverse several art movements of the 20th century, but always on the artist’s own terms.

As with many artists at the time, Miró mingled with other painters, poets and philosophers when he lived in Paris during the Roaring Twenties. During this period of his evolution, the artist met Alexander Calder who would remain his friend from then on, and also James Johnson Sweeney who organized the first Miró retrospective at MoMA in New York in 1941.

Miró constantly experimented with different styles of painting and multiple media, as well as with many different techniques to produce his prints on paper.
